Natural Enemies Of Your Roof

Your roof covering won't last forever. Their natural enemies work against them over time and wear out any roof coverings.

Wind: Strong winds can blow shingles off a building, blow rain underneath the shingle and blow sand against the surface causing erosion on the covering.

Rain: Washes away granular or gravel finishes in roofing such as asphalt shingles and built up roofing. Constant wetting of wood shingles can cause them to rot.

Sun: The constant exposure to ultra-violet radiation degrades organic ingredients in roof coverings. The coverings heats up and cools down over and over again.

Trees: Scraping back and forth over the roofs surface can remove granules from an asphalt shingle roof. Trees that provide too much shade allows the roof to not dry properly after the rain.

Snow and Ice: When an ice dam forms, water from melting snow up on the roof becomes blocked by the ice dam and cannot escape to the gutters. This water backs up under shingles and seeps into the interior.

Time: Here is a chart that shows natural lifetime of various types of roofs

Asphalt Shingles 15-20 years
Asphalt multi-thickness shingles 20-30 years
Asphalt interlocking shingles 15-25 years
Built-up roofing 10-20 years
Roll roofing 10 years
Clay tiles 20+ years
Wood shingles/shakes 10-40+ years
Concrete tiles 20+ years
Slates 30-100 years
Asbestos cement shingles 30-75 years
Metal Roofing 15-40+ years
Single ply membrane 15-25 years
